After many hard-fought struggles, Ieyasu came through the Sengoku period and finally achieved the great feat of unifying the country. He went on to establish the Tokugawa shogunate, which lasted for 265 years, and built the Edo period. He is counted as one of the Three Great Heroes of the Sengoku era. The front crest is modeled on the leaves of the fern, an evergreen plant, and is said to carry wishes for prosperity and longevity.

Because a helmet display carries the meaning of "protecting life," it is said that one display per person is the basic rule. It is generally displayed from around the spring equinox to mid-April and put away around mid-May. There is reportedly no particular rule about which direction to face when displaying it. You may display it only during the Boys' Festival season to renew your spirit once a year, but because the helmet is a decoration meant to "protect life," it is also said to be good to keep it on display all year round as a charm against accidents and disasters.
