Onishi Tsune Shoten is a long-established shop that has made and sold Kyoto folding fans for 100 years. While protecting traditional techniques, it also works hard to develop items that suit modern lifestyles.

Folding Fans That Have Stayed Close to Japanese Culture

The folding fan is a traditional craft born in Kyoto in the Heian period. Its endlessly expanding “suehirogari” shape is also said to be auspicious.

It has long been familiar and developed within Japanese traditional culture such as Noh and Japanese dance.

It has been used in many settings: to cool down, and to add color to important special occasions such as ceremonial events, Shichi-Go-San, and tea gatherings.

Even as the times changed again and again, it has been handed down for about 1,200 years without changing its form.
