Warmth for the future
It was around 1,300 years ago that bentwood began to be made from Akita cedar.
Amazingly, the bento boxes made at that time are almost identical in shape to those made today.
The industry was established around the second half of the 17th century.
The Satake Nishi family, lords of Odate Castle, encouraged it as a side job for lower-ranking samurai, and it developed.

Use good things for a long time.
When Odate Kogei was founded in 1959, its goal was to "create quality products that would please our customers."
The greatest appeal of Odate Kogei's "Magewappa" is that they can be cared for and used for a long time, and "using good things for a long time" is a motto that Odate Kogei holds dear.
This traditional Japanese tableware is handcrafted one by one by artisans in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, and is characterized by its careful craftsmanship and high quality.
The more you use it, the warmth and depth of the wood increases, creating a unique texture.

Carefully crafted by artisans
The materials used for bento boxes are straight grain cedar, which has the most beautiful grain of all cedar wood.
The straight grain part is thinly peeled off, soaked in hot water to soften it, then quickly bent to fit a mold and dried.
The dried bento box is sewn together with cherry bark, the bottom is fitted in place without any gaps, and then sanded to complete the piece.
